Dal romanzo di grande successo di Nick Hornby è stato tratto nel 2000 il film di Stephen Frears, con protagonisti John Cusack e Iben Hjejle (niente di così esotico, è una attrice danese).
Curiosamente la ambientazione originale, londinese, pur così di moda nei film fine anni '90, è stata cambiata e la azione è stata spostata negli Stati Uniti, a Chicago. Probabilmente è stato proprio l'affollarsi di film con alcuni punti di contatto, ambientati a Londra, a consigliare i produttori a cambiare città, in particolare si pensa a Notting Hill con Hugh Grant e Julia Roberts, dove c'è un negozio di limitato successo (in questo caso però di libri di viaggi, anzichè di dischi rari e in vinile), un protagonista 35-enne un po' fuori dal mondo e altre somiglianze con il soggetto, e anche a Sliding Doors, con Gwyneth Paltrow, dove il fidanzato 30-35 anni e nullafacente fa invece l'aspirante scrittore.

Lo spostamento di città in realtà si percepisce ben poco, perché Chicago rimane abbondantemente sullo sfondo, le azioni avvengono in stradine e villette che potrebbero essere benissimo a Londra, e i protagonisti si incontrano regolarmente in locali tipo pub che potrebbero essere posizionati tranquillamente nella capitale inglese (o anche in Italia).

Nel film tratto dal libro, oltre che l'ambientazione, è stata cambiata anche radicalmente la colonna sonora, portandola dagli anni '60 e '70 (con puntate nei '50), e da autori che sottolineavano la cultura enciclopedica dei commessi e del proprietario del negozio Championship Vynile, verso più fruibili autori degli anni '80 e oltre, con la sola eccezione di Let's Get It On di Marvin Gaye.

Altra modifica molto più comprensibile è lo spostamento di tutto l'asse musicale verso gli anni '80, con un ricorso solo marginale ai classici del soul, R&B e country citati a man bassa nel libro. La colonna sonora del film è quindi completamente diversa da quella del libro (cioè dalle canzoni citate nel libro), con la sola eccezione di Let's Get it On di Marvin Gaye, che effettivamente è un po' il motivo conduttore e riassume nel testo la vicenda dei due protagonisti principali, Rob e Laura, oltre a qualche altro punto di contatto per quanto riguarda gli artisti (p.es. Aretha Franklin, Al Green o Bruce Springsteen, dei quali però sono utilizzati brani diversi).
Naturalmente esiste anche un CD con una selezione della colonna sonora del film (15 brani dei 61 utilizzati nel film).
