 La più famosa canzone da discoteca, apice
dell'era della disco music, tuttora
ascoltatissima e presente in ogni festa, era in realtà una beffarda presa in giro messa in scena dal
gruppo all-gay dei Village People.
Il bersaglio era la Young Men's Christian
Association (YMCA), una
associazione creata a metà dell'800 nel Regno Unito e poi attiva anche in USA per aiutare
i bambini e i giovani. Forse potremmo paragonarla alla nostra Azione
Cattolica, con la differenza che la YMCA, pur essendo di origine
protestante, è diventata ecumenica (quindi senza barriere di chiesa) già
nell'800.
Una caratteristica peculiare della YMCA USA era la rete capillare delle
residenze, nella tipologia di ostelli o appartamenti, che potevano dare un
ricovero economico in quasi ogni luogo d'America (erano 100 mila negli anni
'50).
L'effetto ironico nella canzone è ottenuto
senza alcuna forzatura, semplicemente utilizzando slogan ed esortazioni che
avrebbero potuto benissimo trovare posto nei depliant e nei manifesti della
organizzazione. Trattandosi però di convitti e ostelli ovviamente solo
maschili, potevano anche rappresentare un luogo ideale per un gay (e così
pare che fosse). L'allusione a questa diversa interpretazione del soggiorno
presso le strutture della YMCA è abbastanza evidente nei versi (3) e (4).
La musica trascinante e la presentazione ironica e auto ironica del gruppo
(dove ognuno dei componenti interpretava un tipico personaggio del mondo
gay, autentici prototipi o multipli) hanno fornito gli altri elementi per
questo grande successo del 1978. |
