Versi e immagini affascinanti nel testo di questa canzone, notevole successo per il cantautore inglese Nik Kershaw a metà degli anni 80, ma cosa significano? Un indizio lo fornisce il titolo: "the riddle" ovvero "l'enigma". Infatti in questo (raro?) caso quello che sospettiamo spesso, cioè che non significano nulla, è vero. I "gesuiti euclidei vestiti come bonzi per entrare a corte degli imperatori della dinastia dei Ming" di Battiato esistono veramente, ma il vecchio di Aran e i saggi no, non hanno nessuna spiegazione. Nik aveva inventato sul momento una serie di versi a caso del genere "canzone con grandi significati" per un efficace tema musicale che gli era venuto in mente. Il programma era poi creare un testo che avesse un senso, ma dopo alcuni tentativi non riusciti, ha lasciato quelli inventati all'impronta, lanciando un indovinello ai fan: trovate voi il significato. Qualcuno c'è anche quasi riuscito e così il musicista ha dovuto confessare con qualche imbarazzo la verità sul suo sito (vedi la sua confessione qui sotto). La verità non ha però avuto effetto alcuno sulla popolarità del brano, soprattutto in Paesi come l'Italia dove non sempre si fa caso al testo delle canzoni in inglese, e così il brano continua a passare nelle radio nelle trasmissioni di musica soft o "del passato".
 

‘'It amazes me that people are still asking me this question. I spilled the beans a few years ago now so this isn’t exactly news.
My producer (Peter Collins) came over to my house just before we commenced recording on the second album to hear how I was getting on with the writing. He went away saying he thought it sounded great but didn’t think I had the first single. Incensed by this, I went straight up to the spare room and got the chords and melody together for the Riddle. This must’ve taken all of twenty minutes. Knowing time was short before we started recording I jotted down some jibberish with the intention of writing the real lyric as we were recording it.
About a week later we started recording and I threw a rough guide vocal down using the jibberish lyrics. As the album progressed, I tried various different lyric ideas but nothing seemed to fit as well as the guide lyric. So we decided to stick with what we had. “Let’s call it the Riddle”, I thought. Then people would think it was actually about something.
I had completely underestimated the fuss this would cause and, to make matters worse, the marketing and promotions people at MCA decided to make a competition out of it (without telling me). The response was unbelievable. We got sack loads of mail with elaborate and detailed analysis of the song. Line by line, word by word. Some were the size of small novels. Some even made sense!! People stopped me in the street to give me their thoughts and theories. On one occasion I arrived to do a live Radio 1 interview with a certain DJ only to find he’d told the great British public that I would be “revealing all” on his show. He was most put out when I wouldn’t (couldn’t) co-operate.
It all got a bit out of hand and, very quickly, passed the point at which I could come clean without pissing off a lot of people.
In short, “The Riddle” is nonsense, rubbish, bollocks, the confused ramblings of an 80’s popstar.

''Sono stupito che le persone mi pongano ancora questa domanda. Ho rovesciato i fagioli qualche anno fa, quindi questa non è esattamente una novità.
Il mio produttore (Peter Collins) è venuto a casa mia poco prima che iniziassimo a registrare il secondo album per sentire come stavo andando con la scrittura. È andato via dicendo che pensava suonasse alla grande ma non pensava che avessi il primo singolo. Rincuorato da questo, sono andato dritto nella stanza degli ospiti e ho messo insieme gli accordi e la melodia per The Riddle. Devo aver impiegato venti minuti. Sapendo che il tempo era breve prima di iniziare a registrare, ho annotato alcune parole a caso con l'intenzione di scrivere il vero testo mentre lo stavamo registrando.
Circa una settimana dopo abbiamo iniziato a registrare e ho lanciato una voce guida approssimativa usando i testi improvvisati. Man mano che l'album andava avanti, ho provato varie idee per i testi ma niente sembrava adattarsi così come il testo della prima versione. Quindi abbiamo deciso di rimanere con quello che avevamo. "Chiamiamolo l'enigma", ho pensato. Poi la gente penserebbe che si trattasse effettivamente di qualcosa che ha un senso.
Avevo completamente sottovalutato il clamore che ciò avrebbe causato e, a peggiorare le cose, le persone del marketing e delle promozioni di MCA hanno deciso di farne una gara (senza dirmelo). La risposta è stata incredibile. Abbiamo ricevuto un sacco di posta con un'analisi elaborata e dettagliata della canzone. Riga per riga, parola per parola. Alcuni avevano le dimensioni di piccoli racconti. Alcuni avevano anche senso!! Le persone mi fermavano per strada per comunicartmi i loro pensieri e le loro teorie. In un'occasione sono arrivato per fare un'intervista dal vivo a Radio 1 con un certo DJ solo per scoprire che aveva detto al grande pubblico britannico che avrei "rivelato tutto" sul suo programma. Era molto irritato sapendo che non avrei (non potevo) collaborare.
Tutto mi è sfuggito di mano e, molto rapidamente, ho superato il punto in cui potevo confessare senza far incazzare molte persone.
Insomma, “The Riddle” è una sciocchezza, spazzatura, stronzate, le confuse divagazioni di una popstar anni '80.
