Dopo due successi mondiali che
avevano messo in chiaro il ruolo della donna nel rapporto di coppia (Respect
e Think),
Aretha Franklin propone nello stesso anno 1968
una canzone in cui è la donna ad essere dalla parte del torto e tenta di
ricucire, probabilmente con poche speranze di successo, il rapporto con un "uomo
giusto" che lei rimpiange, assieme all'errore che ha fatto. Non un passo
indietro, è un rimpianto che in 1000 canzoni hanno espresso 1000 cantanti
maschi. La canzone era stata pubblicata nello stesso anno da un'altra cantante
soul, Thelma Jones, molto meno nota e di non
lunga carriera, ed è diventata celebre con questa successiva versione, arrivata
al n.2 nella R&B chart USA. Curioso notare che i due autori risultino aver scritto e
composto unicamente questa canzone.
Note alla traduzione
(1) Il titolo della canzone riprende (si suppone ironicamente) una celebre
filastrocca per bambini diffusa nel mondo anglosassone, ispirata alla
filastrocca "Un capretto" (Had Gadya) recitata dai bambini alla fine della cena
della Pasqua ebraica (Seder Pesach) (vedi la spiegazione
nella pagina dedicata alla canzone

e al suo significato profondo).
(2) Si riferisce probabilmente alla parrucca che le donne afroamericane usavano
(ed usano ancora) per coprire i capelli crespi ed avere un aspetto più alla
moda.
(3) Letteralmente "torna indietro" da' maggiore enfasi al ritorno alla casa e
quindi da lei, invece "torna da me" dà maggiore enfasi al ritorno da lei e
quindi alla casa del loro amore. Scegliete voi la traduzione che preferite.
